Wines of Germany hosted its second "Pinot Trio" event focusing on the Pinot varieties - Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris - at The Eventi Hotel in New York City on March 2, 2011. While Germany is best known for Riesling, this event provided an opportunity to showcase other popular varietals in Germany. In fact, Germany is the world's third largest producer of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris and the second largest producer of Pinot Blanc.
The trade tasting highlighted these varietals whose expressions reflected a uniquely German character. The walk-around tasting highlighted 93 wines from 33 producers from a variety of German wine regions such as Baden, Rheinhessen and the Pfalz. Over 100 individuals attended the event including wine writers from The New York Times, Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, importers, retailers and sommeliers from restaurants such as Le Bernardin, 11 Madison Park and John Dory Oyster Bar in New York and Upstairs on the Square in Boston.
The event revealed to American trade and media what many might call Germany's best kept wine secret - its Pinot varietals," said Steffen Schindler of the Deutsches Weininstitut. "We want to raise the profile of these varietals in the United States and showcase the range and depth they can achieve under the care of German winemakers."
German Pinot wines are so beloved in their native country that most of them are consumed before they reach the export market. Yet more and more producers are offering their wines in the U.S. or are looking for states side representation. Producers who attended "Germany's Pinot Trio" included:
