The Saxon State Wine Domain Schloss Wackerbarth is part of an exhibition on the development of wine and design at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It was selected for the section devoted to wine, architecture, and tourism.
“How Wine Became Modern: Design + Wine 1976 to Now” at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will run through mid-April 2011. The unusual exhibition explores changes in wine culture during the past three decades and provides a new understanding of the role of architecture and design in contemporary wine culture.
It is the first exhibition devoted to the modern, global culture of wine. The museum focuses on Schloss Wackerbarth as a model of the unique integration of modern architecture into a baroque ensemble and traditional viticultural landscape to transform the wine estate into an all-around “wine experience.” The Saxon State Wine Domain, as a representative of contemporary German architecture, is one of the thirty “most significant wine estates of the world” presented in the section devoted to wine, architecture, and tourism.
According to Schloss Wackerbarth's marketing director, Michael Thomas, “It is a great tribute to the state of Sachsen that Schloss Wackerbarth was selected to represent Germany at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It also honors the innovative concept of transforming a wine estate into an all-around wine experience – a first in Europe – as well as the professional, identity-defining realization of the idea. We're especially pleased that the exhibition is taking place just as we're celebrating a special anniversary: contemporary and traditional aspects of 850 years of viticulture in Sachsen. Our presence in San Francisco enables us to share this message well beyond the borders of Germany.”
In 2010, the German Wine Institute recognized Schloss Wackerbarth as one of “Forty Viticultural Highlights of Germany.” In 2002, the estate opened its doors as the first wine estate in Europe to offer an all-around wine experience. It welcomes visitors to explore the secrets of wine and sparkling wine in its baroque palace and gardens at the foot of the vineyards and/or its modern wine and sparkling wine facilities, an unusual ambience for wine tastings and events that are a feast for the senses. Open daily.
