Wines of Germany Presents The Third Annual Riesling Week

Riesling is Celebrated by Sommeliers from Coast-to-Coast as Summer’s Perfect White Wine
June 11, 2007

Just in time for summer, Wines of Germany presents the third annual Riesling Week. For seven days, from June 11th-17th, it’s even easier to enjoy German Riesling, the perfect compliment to a warm weather meal, with special by-the-glass selections and other promotions at restaurants across the country.

German Riesling, known for it’s incredible versatility and unrivaled quality, is consistently named as the first choice for white wines by sommeliers nationwide and the food-friendly nature of Germany Riesling makes it the ideal wine to pair with all of your favorite summer dishes.

German Riesling is great with food because of its unique diversity and complex flavors and spices, said Aldo Sohm, winner of the American Sommelier Association’s 2007 Best Sommelier in America contest. You’ll have no difficulty finding a Riesling style to match whatever dish you might choose.

Over 60 top restaurants in New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Chicago have signed on to promote German Riesling during this national celebration. Riesling Week promotions will vary around the country, including special food and wine pairings, tasting menus, flights and by-the-glass selections. This year, the promotion will also include in-store tastings in select wine retail stores.

We are excited to introduce the third year of the very successful Riesling Week promotion, said Monika Reule, Deutsches Weininstitut (DWI) Director. This promotion gives restaurant-goers unparalleled access to Germany’s world-class Rieslings, allowing both wine novices and aficionados alike the luscious chance to enjoy a variety of German Rieslings at their favorite restaurants coast to coast.

Riesling is currently the fastest growing white varietal in the US, showing a 23% increase. Germany grows more than 60% of all Riesling produced worldwide; with its 2,000 years of wine growing tradition, German Riesling is considered the benchmark of all Rieslings.

The growing popularity of German Rieslings among both Sommeliers and consumers makes this a perfect time to showcase these unique wines in U.S. restaurants.
