Wine grape growers donate to Wine Saves Life

News

Monika Reule, the director of the German Wine Institute, awarded a check in the amount of €2191 to Wine Saves Life, a children's charity, in Mainz on December 15, 2011. The amount came from the sale proceeds that more than 200 generators of a large selection of Pinot Noir sample had submitted to DWI.

From these, the 20 best wines have been selected for a comparison sample of international Spätburgunders in London. Of these, the German producers with seven wines in the top 10 will be successfully presented. (Press including SpiegelFTD )

Joachim Binz, the chairman of the organization, founded a decade ago, thanked DWI for the donation and said that Wine Saves Life will use the money worldwide, particularly for children's aid projects.

The selection of the second sample bottles were sold with the consent of the producers on the DWI online store. They were sold out within days.

First International Wine Award awarded PIWI

Over 200 wines of the new fungus-resistant varieties, PIWIS for short, were sampled at the first International Wine Awards in early December 2011 in Bad Durkheim. Six wines received the top award of Gold, with 41 more receiving a gold medal. The PIWI International Association competition aims to highlight the characteristics of the wines from fungus-resistant varieties, and new varieties such as Solaris, Bronner, John, Saphira, Regent or Rondo and make them known to the consumers.

The registration of over 200 wines showed great interest from winemakers. A jury of 15 members was under the direction of the sensor-based expert Martin Darting. The Federal Association of Organic Viticulture ECOVIN has supported the competition and organized the wine tasting.

The five German winners of Big Gold are:

Vineyard Scholtes (Mosel), John Quality Wine 2010

Hof Winery Bruehl (Rheinhessen), Saphira Beerenauslese 2008

Vineyard Wedekind (Rheinhessen), 2010 St. John read paprika

Ollinger-estate Gelz (Mosel), Solaris Beerenauslese 2010

Winzerkeller Baden (Baden), Cuvée Cabernet quality dry 2009

For further results of the tasting, visit www.piwi-international.org.

A presentation of PIWI wines will take place this spring at the trade fair, ProWein, in Düsseldorf on the stage of EVOVIN.
