Five German Rieslings in Wine Spectator's Top Picks of 2003December 31, 2003 The Wine Spectator magazine's top ten wines of 2003 are all red with only one exception and it's not a California Chardonnay it's a German Riesling! J. J. Prüm's 2001 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese was honored by editors of the publication as the most exciting white wine of the year in the December 31 issue. Also scoring in the top fifty were H. Donnhoff's Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese and another wine from the great Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, a Kabinett from Dr. Loosen. Proving that great wines don't have to cost a fortune, wine lovers' should be delighted with the magazine's picks for #46 & #56 - the 2001 St. Urbans Hof Riesling QbA - the lowest priced wine in the bunch at only $10.00, ranked in the top 50, while Lingenfelder's Bird Label QbA - at only $13.00 - hit a high note at #56.
