GERMAN WINE INDUSTRY LOSES QUALITY LEADER - Bernhard Breuer Dies at 57

Bernhard Breuer, winegrower and owner of Weingut Georg Breuer of Rüdesheim, Rheingau died suddenly May 19 at his home. According to sources close to the family, the cause of death was likely a heart attack or embolism.

Bernhard Breuer was one of Germany's most internationally renowned and respected wine growers. An innovator in marketing and a tireless leader in continuous quest for high quality standards, Breuer's initiatives were the impetus behind the development of the Charta organization and planted the seeds for the Rheingau region's vineyard classification system, Erstes Gewächs. His passion and influence also extended well beyond his home region and Riesling, leading him to join with fellow German wine growers Bernd Philippi (Weingut Koehler-Ruprecht, Pfalz) and Werner Näkel (Weingut Meyer Näkel, Ahr) in founding wineries in South Africa and Portugal.

Breuer is survived by his wife Marlena; two daughters, Marcia and Theresa; a brother, Heinrich and mother, Rita; all of Rüdesheim.
