VDP Trade Fair “Weinbörse”

Small in Size yet Comprehensive in Scope

Wallhausen, Germany.....The VDP’s annual spring trade fair, the “Weinbörse,” will take place on Sunday and Monday, 29 and 30 April 2007, in the Rheingoldhalle of Mainz. Worldwide, the Weinbörse is the only trade fair that focuses exclusively on fine German wines, especially Rieslings, from many regions. At this year’s fair, the first comprehensive debut of the new vintage, some 160 Prädikat Wine Estate producers will present ca. 1,000 wines from all German wine-growing regions.

Compared with large, international trade fairs, such as ProWein and Vinexpo, the Weinbörse is “klein aber fein,” i.e. “good things come in small packages.” It is relatively easy for visitors to quickly locate the estate and/or region of interest, without a long trek from hall to hall. The 2,000-square-meter exhibition area in the Rheingoldhalle is all on one floor and provides ample space for the tasting stands as well as the areas reserved for individual discussions. Exhibiting estates are organized according to region and alphabetically within their respective region, as is the catalogue listing the wines available. The multilingual VDP staff will be on hand to assist all guests, particularly first-time visitors to the fair, as well as professionals from Europe and abroad. Press kits will be available in German and in English.

Strong Partners: VDP, the Wine Trade, and the Hospitality Industry

During the past decade, increasing numbers of wine trade specialists and wine-oriented members of the hospitality industry have included VDP wines in their portfolios.....and this, with increasing success in terms of sales and customer satisfaction. The VDP logo – a stylized eagle bearing a cluster of grapes – has evolved into a brand, visible on the capsules of all VDP wines. The Weinbörse affords professionals (“old pros” as well as novices) a chance to observe trends, and serves as a forum for discussions and negotiations with business partners.

Taste the Reason for the Riesling Renaissance!

Riesling is currently enjoying a great renaissance worldwide – not least because it is an extraordinarily versatile varietal, and able to excel in dry, off-dry and lusciously sweet versions. It is highly prized for its food compatibility by leading chefs de cuisine, sommeliers and consumers alike. It is also recognized as an excellent, light and stimulating apéritif, and appreciated as an opulent dessert wine that is rich in nuances. While some 20% of Germany’s vineyards are planted with this noble grape, some 60% of VDP estates’ vineyards are devoted to this grape variety. This is also reflected in the wines on offer at the Weinbörse: well over 60% are Rieslings – truly the most comprehensive selection of Riesling wines of any trade fair in the world.

Additional VDP Dates in 2007 for Wine Professionals and Consumers

“Sneak Preview” in Wiesbaden, 27 + 28 August 2007 (open to the trade only)

Once again the VDP organizes a tasting to showcase the wines of the highest classification level from vintage 2006 (white) and 2005 (red) just prior to their official market release on 1 September 2006. Invitations to this two-day tasting are exclusively limited to a select circle of German and international wine writers, sommeliers and wine merchants. In accordance with international practice, the tastings are seated and all wines are poured at the table.

“Gutswein” in Berlin, 1 + 2 September 2007

This is the official debut of the wines of the highest classification level (as at the sneak preview in Wiesbaden). GutsWein, a tasting of other top-quality wines, takes place immediately after the Grosse Gewächse presentation. More than 100 VDP estates will present their current portfolios at GutsWein.

VDP Annual Wine Auctions in September 2007

  • 21 Sept: Grosser Ring VDP Mosel-Saar-Ruwer at the Europahalle in Trier
  • 22 Sept: VDP Rheingau at Kloster Eberbach/Eltville
  • 23 Sept: VDP Nahe-Ahr at the Römerhalle in Bad Kreuznach

The wines on offer represent the best lots of recent vintages and several rarities. A full 95 percent of the wines are Rieslings.
